If you read my blog regularly, you know that this isn’t a product review kind of a blog. However, I’m always happy to make exceptions when I discover something exceptional.
This is one of those times.
A colleague asked if I was familiar with the hypnosis apps by Andrew Johnson. When I said that I wasn’t, she immediately gave me a glowing recommendation. After checking them out for myself, I understand and echo her opinion. According to his web site, Johnson has been trained in a variety of relaxation techniques, including hypnosis and mindfulness. His passion is helping us relax (and I’d say he’s got a HUGE target audience.)
He has created a series of easy to use hypnosis apps to help us do just that. Apps include Deep Sleep, Relax, Infinite Relaxation, Build Confidence, Visualize success, Positive pregnancy, Exam support. Cost ranges from free to 4.99. They are available for iPhone, Android or via his web site. While I have not listened to all of them, the ones I have listened to have been very well done. I have recommended them to some clients who are having issue with getting to sleep or getting good sleep. From them I get good reports about how effective it has been for them.
The apps allow for some customization: long or short instructions, how many times the hypnosis is repeated and whether you want to wake up or continue sleeping at the end. This is clinical hypnosis, not the sideshow stuff so there’s no worries that you’ll start quacking like a duck because he threw that suggestion in there.
My personal experience has been positive. The first couple of times I listened to one I could not get through the introduction before I was asleep. A few months ago I was flying to Denver when the pilot announced that it was likely to be rocky for a while.I’m not a fearful flyer but because of some previous experience (being on a plane that started going down) I don’t particularly enjoy rough air. I remembered that I had Johnson’s free relaxation app on my phone, so I plugged in my ear buds and started listening. I didn’t go to sleep; however, I was so relaxed my mouth kept falling open (a nice look for my fellow passengers, I’m sure.)
The more we learn about the brain the more we learn about how powerful it is. We can easily think ourselves into fearfulness or sadness. Disciplines like meditation have been shown to have a positive influence on physical processes like blood pressure. These apps provide a convenient and inexpensive way to harness that power in a positive manner.
Just a note: There are some people for whom hypnosis is not recommended. If you have any question about using it, please discuss it with your therapist.
